Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Laohugou, Lingyuan County, Liaoning. It was named by Shenyang Institute of Geology and mineral resources (Shenyang Geological Survey Center, China Geological Survey) in 1970 and firstly used for publication by the Liaoning regional stratigraphic chart compilation group in 1978.

Lithology and Thickness

It is characterized by the brown, yellow-green sandstone and conglomerate intercalated with grey, gray-black siltstone, shale and thin coal seams or coal streak. The thickness is 68.1 to 400 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

In western part of Liaoning province, the Laohugou Fm is disconformable in contact to the underlying Hongla Fm or Houfulongshan Fm

Upper contact

It is in fault contact with the overlying Middle Jurassic Beipiao Fm, or Xinlonggou Fm

Regional extent

This formation is distributed in Laohugou of Lingyuan, Yangcaogou of Beipiao, Boluo and Yingzi of Kuntou, Shimengou of Chaoyang, Shennangou of Xiaofang and other places in western Liaoning.

Fossils

Plants: Neocalamites shanxiensis, Dictyophyllum nathorsti, Clathropteris meniscioides, Cladophlebis gracilis, Lepidopteris toreziensis, Glossophyllum shensiense. And bivalve fossils and conchostracan fossils and fossil spore and pollens.
